Our Assessment: The Colt Model 1917 is one of the most fascinating revolvers from the early 20th century, born from wartime necessity and executed with Colt’s signature craftsmanship. This makes it especially desirable to collectors who value both historical context and classification flexibility.

During World War I, the U.S. military faced a shortage of M1911 pistols and turned to Colt and Smith & Wesson to produce revolvers capable of firing the same .45 ACP cartridge. The result was a modified version of Colt’s large-frame New Service revolver, adapted with a bored-through cylinder and the use of half-moon clips to facilitate extraction of rimless cartridges. These revolvers saw extensive use during the war and well into the 20th century by American troops and law enforcement agencies.

This example remains in Very Good condition with strong mechanics, a bright bore, and the majority of its original finish still present. Its C&R status and early serial number make it even more appealing to collectors of U.S. military sidearms. Whether you’re drawn to its wartime history or simply appreciate the rugged design of Colt’s large-frame revolvers, this Model 1917 is a significant piece worth adding to any serious collection.
