Our Assessment: This Colt Model 1895 New Navy is an early example of a swing-out cylinder revolver from the dawn of modern double-action design. Chambered in .41 Long Colt, this 1894-manufactured revolver predates the turn of the century, placing it firmly in the Antique category under federal law. The New Navy series saw service in the U.S. Navy and represents Colt’s transition toward more robust, modern handguns. These revolvers helped establish the swing-out cylinder and manual ejector rod as standard features for revolvers in the 20th century.
This example shows significant wear and age, with a smooth brown patina overtaking the original blue finish, softening of the grip checkering, and a dark, well-worn bore. Mechanically, the revolver is in need of some attention—lock-up is somewhat loose, timing is ok, and the hammer is firm when cocking back. However, the fact that it still cycles in both single and double action and retains its original grips adds to its historical value. For collectors interested in early Colt revolvers or antique American sidearms, this piece remains a tangible example of a transformative era in handgun development and could serve as a rewarding restoration project or display piece.
