Our Assessment: The Colt McCormick Factory Racer represents a fascinating collaboration between Colt and competition shooter Chip McCormick during the height of the 1990s practical-shooting boom. Built as a limited-production performance model based on the Series 80 Government frame, the Factory Racer incorporated refinements from the custom 1911 world directly into a factory gun—bridging the gap between Colt’s traditional craftsmanship and the demands of IPSC and action pistol competitors. Chambered in .45 ACP, it retained the classic five-inch Government barrel and single-action operation but added tuned internals, match-grade trigger geometry, and distinctive “==McCormick== Factory Racer” markings that immediately set it apart from standard production pistols.
This 1994 example remains exceptionally well preserved, retaining roughly 99% of its chrome finish with only faint handling and a minor “idiot mark.” The bore is mirror bright with sharp rifling, rating 10/10, and the action feels tight and precise—testament to the hand-fitted quality of these rare Colts. Complete with its original Colt box, blue case, manuals, and two magazines, it stands as both a functional competition-grade 1911 and a collector’s piece from an era when Colt was reasserting its place in the modern pistol market.
