Markings: The left side of the barrel is marked “LAWMAN MK III / .357 MAGNUM CTG.”. The right side of the barrel is marked “COLT’S PT. F.A. MFG. CO. / HARTFORD, CONN. U.S.A.”. The flat under the crane and the crane are marked with the serial number. The left sideplate is marked with a “Rampant Colt” logo; it is partially struck at the rump. The left front of the trigger guard is marked with “VP” in a triangle and at the rear with “L”. The grip panels have gold-colored Colt logo medallions.
Barrel Length: Advertised as 2″, we got 2 1/8″
Sights / Optics: The front sight is a ramp blade, integral to the rib. The rear sight is a square notch in a “U” groove in the frame.
Stock Configuration & Condition: The grips are checkered walnut with a varnished finish. The panels are free of notable damages or cracks, a few shallow compression marks are found infrequently. The grips are in about Excellent condition.
Type of Finish: Matte Blue with Case Colored Hammer
Finish Originality: All Original
Bore Condition: The bore is bright and the rifling is sharp. There is no erosion.
Overall Condition: This revolver retains about 97% of its finish. There are only a few faint marks present, none of which are deep. Some rub wear is found on the hammer and side plate from the thumb piece. The cylinder has a shallow drag line. The knurling on the ejector rod and hammer are sharp. The screw heads are sharp but there are light marks from a screwdriver in the grip screw. The side plate’s Rampant Colt logo is missing details in the rear section, the rest of the markings are clear. Overall, this gun rates in about Excellent condition.
Mechanics: The lock-up on this revolver produces mild play in all 6 chambers. The trigger is smooth in double action, and crisp in single action at 4lbs 12oz. The action functions correctly. We have not fired this revolver. This revolver has a wide target style hammer and a smooth trigger.
Box, Paperwork & Accessories: Included is an aftermarket white cardboard box, the end label information has not bee filled out, there are a few roughing marks from storage, it rates in about Fine to Excellent condition. A sheet of wax paper is also provided, in Excellent condition.
Our Assessment: The Colt Lawman Mark III is a ‘service grade’ revolver with a matte blue finish and superb mechanics. Based on the Trooper line of handguns marketed to law enforcement agents, capable of digesting a constant diet of .357 Magnum or .38 Special +P loads. This revolver looks to have seen light use and was well maintained. If the collectors don’t take advantage of this find, it will make for a great carry piece that is small enough to conceal.
