Our Assessment: The Colt Government Model MK IV Series 70 in .45 ACP is a quintessential example of Colt’s post-WWII refinement of the legendary 1911 platform. Introduced in 1970, this model features the hallmark Series 70 collet bushing and a more refined trigger pull than its predecessors, all while maintaining the rugged reliability and combat-tested ergonomics of the original M1911. The 5″ barrel, steel frame, and single-action operation make it a top-tier choice for serious shooters, collectors, and anyone who values timeless American craftsmanship.
This particular pistol features a factory bright nickel finish—a less common and highly desirable option that enhances its presentation-grade aesthetic. The reflective surface beautifully complements the deep rollmarks and classic styling, making it a standout in any Colt or 1911 collection. The Series 70 design also omits the later Series 80 firing pin safety, which many enthusiasts prefer for its cleaner trigger break and simpler internals.
Whether you’re a seasoned collector searching for a high-condition vintage Colt or a shooter wanting a historically significant .45 ACP, this MK IV offers both pride of ownership and range-ready functionality. With its iconic profile, excellent trigger, and legacy-backed performance, this Colt continues to represent the gold standard in American semi-automatic handguns.
