Our Assessment: The Colt Diamondback has long been regarded as the crown jewel of Colt’s “snake gun” series, especially in the smaller calibers. Introduced in 1966 as a deluxe version of the Colt Detective Special, the Diamondback was produced with a target-grade ribbed barrel, fully adjustable rear sight, and a wide target hammer—all features that made it a favorite among shooters and collectors alike. Chambered in .22LR, this revolver combines Colt’s legendary craftsmanship with the soft-shooting practicality of a rimfire, making it an ideal companion for target work, training, or display.

This particular example, with its 4-inch barrel, retains about 99% of its original deep Colt blue finish and shows only the faintest turn line on the cylinder. The walnut target stocks with silver Colt medallions are in excellent shape, and the revolver’s mechanics are as tight and responsive as the day it left Hartford. It comes complete with its original factory box—an important piece of provenance for collectors.

Whether you’re a Colt aficionado, a rimfire revolver enthusiast, or simply someone who appreciates peak 20th-century American firearms design, this Diamondback is a stunning specimen. Its condition, originality, and completeness make it a top-tier addition to any serious Colt collection. Please check out our high quality photos, and good luck on your bids! – J.D.
