Our Assessment: The 1972 Colt Combat Commander offered here is a standout example of Colt’s early efforts to modernize the 1911 platform without straying far from its war-proven DNA. Featuring a 4.25” barrel and lightweight frame, the Combat Commander was designed as a carry-friendly alternative to the Government Model while still maintaining the full-power punch of .45 ACP. This particular pistol is a steel-frame variant from the “70SC” serial range, distinguishing it from the alloy-framed Lightweight Commander, and it’s finished in satin stainless—a distinctive and relatively scarce configuration for its time.

Cosmetically, this pistol remains in Very Good to Excellent condition with about 97% of its finish retained. Minor scuffs and light handling marks are present but do not detract from the pistol’s overall appeal. The walnut grip panels are well-preserved and still bear crisp Colt medallions, with no signs of cracking or wear. Mechanically, the pistol is solid with a clean trigger break and tight slide-to-frame fit. The bore is bright with sharp rifling, rating 9/10 in the eyes of this writer.

Included with this classic is the original factory box, owner’s manual, and one 7-round stainless magazine, making it an appealing package for both the Colt collector and the shooter who appreciates vintage American steel. As a C&R-eligible example from the early postwar production era, this Combat Commander reflects a transitional moment in Colt’s evolution—bridging the gap between military heritage and modern civilian carry practicality.
