Bore Condition: The bore is bright and the rifling is sharp. There is no erosion in the bore but there is minor fouling present that should clean out. In this writer’s opinion the bore rates 9/10.

Overall Condition: This revolver retains about 95% of its metal finish. The balance of the finish shows minor operation wear. There is a faint turn line between the cylinder stops. There is some erosion of finish at the muzzle and oxidation on the base pin screw. The screw heads are sharp. The markings are clear. Overall, this revolver is in Very Good condition.

Mechanics: The action functions correctly. Lockup produces barely perceptible side to side play. The trigger is crisp. There is rust on the base pin screw which makes removal of the pin noticeably difficult. We did not fire this revolver. As with all used firearms, a thorough cleaning may be necessary to meet your maintenance standards.

Box, Paperwork & Accessories: None

Our Assessment: The Colt Single Action Army stands as one of the most iconic firearms ever produced—introduced in 1873, embraced across the American frontier, immortalized in early Hollywood, and still manufactured today in a form that remains faithful to the original Peacemaker. This example, manufactured in 1972, comes towards the end of the 2nd Generation revolvers. These transitional-period revolvers are especially noteworthy because they retain several desirable legacy features—most important among them the removable cylinder bushing, a hallmark of 1st and 2nd Generation revolvers and a feature later discontinued on most 3rd Gen production. This early configuration represents Colt’s effort to carry forward traditional construction methods even as manufacturing practices were beginning to modernize.

Chambered in .357 Magnum and fitted with the classic 5.5″ barrel, this SAA reflects the precise configuration long associated with screen legends and western film revolvers. The .357 Magnum cartridge, introduced in the 1930s, offered excellent accuracy and ballistic performance, pairing naturally with the SAA’s well-balanced frame and intuitive handling. The traditional blue and case-colored finish was the period’s most desirable aesthetic, giving this revolver the unmistakable look of the Peacemakers carried by John Wayne, Roy Rogers, and other icons of the silver screen.

This revolver retains about 95% of its original finish, with sharp markings, a bright 9/10 bore, and strong mechanical character. Notable handling traits include rust on the base-pin screw, which makes base-pin removal more resistant than usual but leaves the revolver fully functional. The non-factory antler grips, add a personalized frontier style while remaining structurally sound. Altogether, this early-1970s Single Action Army stands as a particularly attractive example of the transitional period into 3rd Generation production—combining classic Peacemaker aesthetics, the collectible removable-bushing feature, and the powerful .357 Magnum chambering.
