There is a notable compression line on the right side of the forend by the barrel band spring. There are minor chips around the buttplate and a gouge on the right side of the stock above the trigger group. There are no cracks. The metal buttplate has lost its finish, has semi sharp checkering and shows surface scratches and patina. The upper handguard shows similar wear to the stock with a small chip toward the left front portion of the sighting groove. Overall the wood is in about Good condition as refinished.

Type of Finish: Parkerized

Finish Originality: Original. There is some stock finish on some of the metal.

Bore Condition: The bore is bright and the rifling is sharp. There is no erosion in the bore. There is some minor fouling. In this writer’s opinion the bore rates 8.5/10.

Overall Condition: This rifle retains about 90% of its finish. The trigger group, Bolt, and Receiver show operational wear, especially in friction areas. The slide and barrel have begun to patina. There is some minor finish loss on the front sight and the leading edges. The marking on the barrel is a little faded but is still visible. Overall the rifle is in about Very Good condition.

Our Assessment: The Standard Products M1 Carbine is a product of the immense industrial mobilization that defined American arms production during the Second World War. Manufactured most likely in late 1943, this receiver comes from Standard Products of Port Clinton, Ohio, a company better known for automotive components before turning its facilities toward wartime small arms manufacture. Standard Products ultimately produced roughly 247,000 carbines for the U.S. military, placing it among the smaller prime contractors in the M1 Carbine program. The 10-43 dated Underwood barrel is consistent with wartime subcontracting practices, as Underwood supplied barrels to several carbine manufacturers. The rifle also shows a mix of Inland, IBM, and other subcontractor components, reflecting the interchangeable parts system that allowed carbines to be assembled and later serviced efficiently throughout the war and postwar arsenal rebuild programs.

Chambered in .30 Carbine, the lightweight intermediate cartridge adopted in 1941 to provide greater range and capacity than a service pistol while remaining easier to handle than a full power rifle, this example retains approximately 90 percent of its parkerized finish with expected operational wear on friction surfaces. The bore is bright with sharp rifling and only minor fouling present, rating 8.5 out of 10. The refinished oval cut low wood stock and handguard show scattered compressions and light wear but remain solid without cracks, and the action functions correctly. Accompanied by its Civilian Marksmanship Program certificate and related documentation, this Standard Products M1 Carbine represents a well preserved example of a classic World War II U.S. service rifle with documented CMP provenance.
