Our Assessment: This Mod 1875 rifle from C. Sharps Arms in Big Timber, Montana is a finely crafted reproduction of the iconic 19th-century single-shot rifle that earned legendary status on the American frontier. This particular example is chambered in .45-70 Government and features a 24-inch round barrel. The rifle is outfitted with a schnabel forend and a straight-hand fancy walnut stock.
The original 1875 was vanishingly rare, with only five examples made. Christian Sharps hoped to build a stronger, lighter rifle that was easier to manufacture.
The original Sharps rifles were a series of large bore single shot falling block breech loading rifles produced between 1848 and 1881. A feared sniper weapon in the Civil War, they brought us the term “sharpshooter”. This modern C. Sharps Arms build honors that heritage with attention to period-correct details and precision machining. Whether used for silhouette competitions or historical reenactment, this rifle offers both outstanding performance and a direct connection to one of the most respected firearm designs in American history.
