Our Assessment: The Browning SA-22 is one of the most elegant and time-tested rimfire rifles ever produced, originally designed by John M. Browning himself in 1914. This takedown, rear-loading semi-automatic has remained virtually unchanged in mechanical design for over a century due to its reliability, balance, and refined craftsmanship. The Grade III variant, like this example from 1979, is distinguished by its intricate engraving and select walnut stocks, elevating the rifle from a field piece to a collector’s showpiece. The scrollwork and animal scenes on the receiver exhibit the fine artistry typical of Browning’s higher-grade models, especially those manufactured under the close quality standards of the Japanese Miroku plant during this era.

This rifle retains about 97% of its original finish and remains mechanically sound with a bright, sharp bore that reflects its careful upkeep. The fine checkering and dark walnut grain are still striking despite some light wear. Whether you’re looking to round out a Browning collection, add a graceful .22 LR to your sporting battery, or acquire a rifle that’s just as suitable for display as it is for practical plinking, this SA-22 Grade III offers a blend of artistry, heritage, and function that few rimfires can match.
