Our Assessment: This Browning Model 1885 High Wall is a distinctive commemorative example of John M. Browning’s legendary falling block design, produced in 1990 to mark the Wyoming Centennial. The High Wall action has long been regarded as one of the strongest and most elegant single shot rifle actions ever produced, and Browning’s Japanese manufactured examples are widely respected for their precision machining and consistent quality. This rifle pairs that proven action with a striking 30 inch tapered octagon barrel and a receiver engraved in recognition of Wyoming’s 1890 to 1990 statehood centennial, giving it both mechanical and regional historical appeal.
Chambered in .25-06 Remington, the rifle reflects a cartridge that evolved from early twentieth century wildcat experimentation into a highly regarded commercial round known for flat trajectory, excellent velocity, and strong long range performance. The long octagon barrel enhances balance and visual presence while also lending itself well to the cartridge’s efficiency. Sighting equipment consists of a dovetailed blade front and square notch rear sight, with the barrel drilled and tapped for a scope mount for those who prefer optical assistance. The checkered walnut stocks with light Schnabel forend, straight grip, straight comb, and crescent buttplate maintain a traditional profile that complements the rifle’s classic single shot configuration.
Condition remains excellent overall, with approximately 97 percent of the original blued finish present and only minor handling marks visible. The bore is bright with sharp rifling, shows light fouling, and rates 9 out of 10. Markings are clear, screwheads remain sharp, and the engraving on the receiver is well defined. The action functions correctly, and the rifle is accompanied by its factory box. This Wyoming Centennial High Wall stands as a handsome and well executed commemorative single shot from Winchester, blending historical tribute with Browning’s enduring design legacy.
