Markings:
The left side of the receiver is richly engraved with flowing scrollwork surrounding gold-inlaid hunting dogs on point. The right side of the receiver shows fine scroll engraving surrounding three gold-inlaid ducks in flight. The barrel is marked with the gauge and chamber information along with “Browning Arms Company, Morgan, Utah & Montreal P.Q”. The serial number “00491NM972” is marked on the receiver.

Sights / Optics: The shotgun is equipped with a steel bead front sight on a solid rib.
Stock Configuration & Condition:
The stock and forend are high-grade walnut with a gloss finish and sharp checkering. The buttstock has a Browning black rubber recoil pad installed. The wood shows bold figure with no handling wear visible through the factory protective wrap. The stock rates are in Excellent overall condition, appearing new.

Bore Condition: The bore is bright and smooth. In this writer’s opinion, the bore rates 10/10.
Overall Condition: This shotgun retains nearly all of its original finish. It remains wrapped in its original factory packaging with no evidence of handling or use. The engraved receiver and gold inlays are crisp and vibrant. The screw heads are sharp. The markings are clear. Overall, this shotgun rates in Excellent to Like New condition.
Mechanics: The action functions correctly when tested. As with all used firearms, a thorough cleaning may be necessary to meet your maintenance requirements.
Box, Paperwork & Accessories:
This shotgun comes in its original Browning factory box with Styrofoam inserts, factory plastic sleeve, owner’s manual, and factory literature.
Our Assessment:
The Browning Model 12 is a modern reproduction of the legendary Winchester Model 12, manufactured by Miroku in Japan under Browning’s supervision. Offered in select gauges and grades, these shotguns were built to the same mechanical standards as the original, while often featuring higher-grade wood and embellishments.
This example is a Grade V (G5), featuring beautiful scroll engraving with gold inlaid dogs and pheasants. The fit and finish are top-tier, with a deep, polished blue and stunning exhibition-grade walnut. It is chambered in the always-desirable 28 gauge, making it a lightweight upland gun with strong collector appeal.
In today’s market, a Grade V in new-in-box condition is a more than rare find. This masterpiece of a shotgun will make an excellent addition or centerpiece to a high-end Browning or Winchester collection, and while it is certainly capable of being a refined upland field gun, its untouched state makes it most desirable as a collector’s piece.
