Our Assessment: The Browning Model 1886 is a faithful modern revival of John Moses Browning’s legendary large frame lever action, a design originally created to handle the most powerful sporting cartridges of the black powder era. Browning’s partnership with Miroku in the late twentieth century produced some of the finest modern lever action rifles ever made, combining classic lines with excellent metallurgy and precise machining. This 1986 production example captures the scale, balance, and mechanical authority that made the original Winchester Model 1886 one of the most respected sporting rifles of its time.

Chambered in .45-70 Government, the rifle is paired with one of the most storied cartridges in American firearms history. Adopted by the U.S. Army in 1873, the .45-70 quickly earned a reputation for deep penetration and decisive performance on large game. The 26 inch octagonal barrel maximizes velocity and balance while reinforcing the rifle’s traditional silhouette, and the tubular magazine and robust lever action provide the smooth, confident operation expected of the 1886 pattern. The globe front sight, semi-buckhorn rear, and installed tang peep sight reflect a classic long-range sporting configuration, well suited to the cartridge’s historical role.

This example retains approximately 95 percent of its original blued finish, with scattered handling marks and light scratches consistent with careful use. The bore is bright with sharp rifling and no erosion present, showing some fouling and rating 9 out of 10 in this writer’s opinion. The walnut stocks exhibit minor compression dings and handling marks with no cracks or chips, presenting in Very Good condition with a 13 inch length of pull. Markings remain clear, screw heads are sharp, and the action functions correctly with a tight lock-up and crisp trigger. Overall, this Browning Model 1886 stands as a well-preserved modern expression of one of Browning’s most powerful and enduring lever action designs.
