Our Assessment: Browning’s B-78 was introduced during a period when traditional single-shot rifles were experiencing a renewed appreciation among precision and varmint shooters. Manufactured by Miroku in Japan, the B-78 drew clear inspiration from the Winchester Model 1885 High Wall, pairing a classic falling-block silhouette with modern steels, precise machining, and Browning’s hallmark fit and finish. By the late twentieth century, the B-78 had earned a reputation for strength, accuracy, and refined workmanship, appealing to shooters who valued both performance and traditional rifle aesthetics.

Chambered in .22-250 Remington, this rifle reflects one of the most successful high-velocity varmint cartridges of the modern era. Standardized in 1965 after decades as a popular wildcat, the .22-250 is known for its flat trajectory, excellent accuracy, and effective long-range performance on small game and varmints. The 26 inch barrel and rigid falling-block action provide an ideal platform for extracting the cartridge’s full ballistic potential, while the absence of iron sights and the inclusion of Browning scope rings underscore the rifle’s intended precision role.

This example retains approximately 99 percent of its original blued finish, with deep, even coloration and crisp markings throughout. The bore is bright with sharp rifling and no erosion, rating 10 out of 10 in this writer’s opinion. The checkered walnut stock set presents attractively, with only light handling marks and well-defined checkering, fitting the action tightly with no cracks or structural issues. Overall, this Browning B-78 stands as a fine representation of Miroku-era production, combining classic single-shot design with modern precision and craftsmanship.
