Markings: The underside of the receiver is marked “BROWNING”. The left water table is marked with a circled “H”. The serial number is under the lever. The left side of the left barrel is marked “BROWNING ARMS COMPANY MORGAN, UTAH & MONTREAL P.Q. / MADE JAPAN”. The right side of the right barrel is marked “B-S/S SPECIAL STEEL 20 GA – SHELLS – 2 ¾” AND 3””. The flat on the underside of the left barrel is marked “04939”, a circled “H”, a circled “SP”, “NP”, 20”, “26” and “**” (MOD). The right barrel flat is marked with a circled “SP”, “NP”, 20”, “26” and “**_” (IC). The left barrel in front of the flat is marked “3” and the right barrel “4”. The top surface of the forearm iron is marked “04939”. The trigger guard, sides of the frame, and lever are scroll engraved.

Sights / Optics: This shotgun is mounted with a full length matted rib and a single white bead at the muzzle.
Stock Configuration & Condition: The stocks are two-piece checkered walnut with a beavertail forend, pistol grip, and fluted straight comb. There are some scattered dings and compressions on the forend. There are some scattered little tiny compressions and draglines on the buttstock. There are a few deeper compressions on the belly of the buttstock. The checkering is strong, with only light wear and no damage. The LOP measures 14” from the front of the trigger to the back of the buttplate. The buttplate shows some little nicks and scratches, mainly at the heel. The stocks rate in about Fine condition.

Bore Condition: The bores are bright. There is no erosion.
Overall Condition: This shotgun retains about 85% of its metal finish. The balance of the finish shows handling wear and thinning, primarily to the underside of the frame, trigger guard and lower tang. This was a used but cared for shotgun, it came to us cleaned and well oiled by a man who cared about his guns. The thinning indicated some use, but nothing indicates abuse. The screw heads are barely worn. The markings are clear. Overall, this shotgun rates in about Fine condition.
Mechanics: The action functions properly. We have not fired this shotgun. As with all used firearms, a thorough cleaning may be necessary to meet your maintenance standards.

Our Assessment: The Browning Side by Side or BSS as it’s known is famous for reliability and longevity. They are almost impossible to wear out and are made to exacting and high quality standard. Shooters and collectors have come to love the BSS, considering it one of the finest modern SXS shotguns made.
This example shows signs of use, but remains attractive with a lifetime left.
It has a single selective trigger with the selector in the rear of the trigger guard where it is easy to access. It balances just ahead of the barrel hinge and points well with its 26” barrels.
This would make a great field gun for the larger upland birds and a great cowboy action shooting side by side, if you were willing to subject this nice shotgun to such hard use.
