Markings: The frame is marked, “BROWNING” on the bottom with the serial number under the brake lever. The forend is marked, “2191B72” The right side of the barrels are marked, “B-S/S SPECIAL STEEL 20GA. SHELLS – 2 ¾” AND 3” The barrel flats are marked, “2191B72” with nitro proofing “NP” stamps, “20, 26” and Browning choke markings for Modified and Improved Cylinder. There is engraving throughout the receiver.

Sights/Optics: There is a silver bead at the front of the serrated barrel rib.
Stock Configuration and Condition: The stocks are two-piece checkered walnut with beavertail forend, straight wrist, straight fluted comb, and synthetic Browning buttplate. There is one long scratch on the forearm but few other handling marks. The buttstock has minor scratches and pressure dents throughout. The checkering is sharp. There are no chips or cracks. The LOP measures 14 1/8” from the front of the trigger to the back of the buttpad. Overall, the stocks rate in about Very Good condition.

Bore Condition: Both bores are bright with no erosion. There is light fouling in the bores. In this writer’s opinion the bores rate at 9.5/10.
Overall Condition: This shotgun retains about 98% of its metal finish. The balance of the finish shows light handling and storage wear. There are light scratches. The blue finish is strong throughout. The screw heads are sharp and the markings are clear. Overall, this shotgun rates in about Fine condition.
Mechanics: The action functions correctly. We have not fired this shotgun. As with all used firearms, thorough cleaning may be necessary to meet your maintenance requirements.

Our Assessment: The Browning BSS (Browning Side-by-Side) is one of the most respected modern production double guns offered by Browning, combining traditional styling with strong modern construction. Manufactured in Japan beginning in the early 1970s, these shotguns quickly earned a reputation for durability, solid lockup, and excellent field performance. This 1972 example, now C&R eligible, represents first-year production and reflects the quality and craftsmanship that made the BSS a favorite among upland hunters and side-by-side enthusiasts.
Chambered in 20 gauge for both 2 ¾” and 3” shells, this shotgun features 26” barrels with fixed Improved Cylinder (right) and Modified (left) chokes, providing a versatile setup for upland game and sporting use. It is equipped with a single mechanical trigger and split ejectors, offering reliable and consistent operation. The shotgun retains approximately 98% of its original blued finish with only light handling and storage marks. The engraving remains crisp, the screw heads are sharp, and the markings are clear. The checkered walnut stocks, configured with a beavertail forend and straight wrist, show one long scratch on the forearm and minor scratches and pressure dents on the buttstock, but no chips or cracks. The checkering remains sharp, and the stocks rate in about Very Good condition.
Both bores are bright with no signs of erosion and only light fouling present, rating 9.5 out of 10 in this writer’s opinion. The action functions correctly, though we have not test fired the shotgun. As with all used firearms, a thorough cleaning and inspection may be advisable prior to use. With its desirable gauge, strong condition, and classic side-by-side configuration, this early Browning BSS is an excellent addition to any collection or field battery.
