Sights / Optics: The front sight is a hooded beaded blade, dovetailed to a serrated ramp, screwed to the barrel. The rear sight has been removed. The receiver is mounted with a Leupold Vari-X III 3.5-10x scope with a duplex reticle. The glass in the scope is clear. The scope shows light wear, with a couple scratches scattered throughout the scope’s finish. Overall, the scope rates in Very Good to Fine condition.

The LOP measures 13 3/4″ from the front of the trigger to the back of the buttpad. The stocks show light wear, with scattered scratches, dings and compressions throughout. The gloss finish on the forend is starting to show light cracks. The checkering is well defined. The stocks fit tightly to the frame, with no play. There are no structural chips or cracks. Overall, the stocks rate in Very Good condition.

Type of Finish: Blued

Finish Originality: Original

Bore Condition: The bore is bright with sharp rifling. There is no erosion in the bore. In this writer’s opinion, the bore rates 10/10.

Overall Condition: This rifle retains about 95% of its original metal finish. The balance of the finish shows scattered surface corrosion throughout the front half of the barrel and at the muzzle, and front sight. Otherwise, the bluing is deep and dark throughout. The markings and engravings are clear and legible. Overall, this rifle rates in Good to Very Good condition.

Mechanics: The action functions correctly, as does the cross-bolt safety. We did not fire this rifle, but we did perform a mechanic’s check. As with all used firearms, a thorough cleaning may be necessary to meet your maintenance requirements.

Box, Paperwork & Accessories: This rifle comes with the Leupold scope as mentioned above.

Our Assessment: Browning’s BAR High Power series stands among the finest semi-automatic sporting rifles of the postwar era, blending traditional Belgian craftsmanship with modern magnum performance. Introduced in the late 1960s, the BAR quickly earned a reputation for its smooth gas-operated action, elegant lines, and the sort of machining and engraving that marked Browning’s golden period. This 1970 C&R-eligible example reflects that heritage beautifully, wearing its Grade I engraving with classic Belgian character — a bear on one side, a ram on the other — framed in deep scroll that elevates the rifle beyond a simple hunting tool.

Chambered in .300 Winchester Magnum, the BAR delivers one of the most capable long-range hunting cartridges ever developed. Introduced in 1963, the .300 Win. Mag. became a benchmark for North American big-game hunting due to its flat trajectory, high retained energy, and ability to push 180-grain bullets with authority at extended distances. In a semi-automatic platform with a 24″ barrel, the cartridge reaches its full potential, offering manageable recoil, rapid follow-up shots, and the accuracy that made the BAR a favorite among guides and serious field hunters alike.

This rifle remains mechanically sound with a bright 10/10 bore and strong, original bluing. Cosmetic wear is present in the form of scattered surface corrosion forward of the forend and at the muzzle, but the engraving, markings, and overall presentation remain handsome. The walnut stock set shows honest field use with scattered handling marks and light finish cracks on the forend’s gloss, yet retains tight fit and well-cut checkering. Topped with a Leupold Vari-X III 3.5–10× scope in clean condition, this 1970 Belgian BAR stands as a functional, collector-worthy example of Browning’s most elegant autoloader — a rifle that remains as capable in the field today as it was the year it left Liège.
