Our Assessment: The Browning Auto-5 Sweet Sixteen is one of the finest and most revered upland bird guns ever built. First introduced in 1937, the Sweet Sixteen was the 16-gauge version of the iconic Auto-5 design, made lighter and slimmer for fast handling in the field. Built in Belgium by FN and imported by Browning, these guns were prized by discerning sportsmen who wanted the perfect balance between 12-gauge power and 20-gauge agility.
This 1952 example shows the classic round knob grip, richly figured walnut, and deep bluing that made the Sweet Sixteen so popular among upland hunters and collectors alike. The improved cylinder choke and 25.5″ barrel make this a versatile choice for everything from grouse to rabbits, and the long-recoil action is famously soft-shooting and reliable. Whether you’re chasing birds or nostalgia, this shotgun delivers.
Collectors prize these early Belgian Sweet Sixteens not only for their performance but for their craftsmanship and history. With honest handling wear and strong mechanics, this is a vintage semi-auto you can actually enjoy in the field or proudly display.
