The front toggle is marked “DWM”. There is a small “B” in circle on the left of the barrel extension. The extractor is marked “CARREGADA” (loaded).

Sights/ Optics: The front sight is a blade dovetailed to a base integral to the muzzle. The rear sight is a “V”-notch integral to the rear toggle.

Stock Configuration & Condition/ Grip: The grips are two-piece checkered wood. The grips have only a few scattered minor marks. The checkered is well defined. There are no chips or cracks. Overall, the grips are in Fine condition.

Type of Finish: Blue & Strawed

Finish Originality: Refinished

Bore Condition: The bore is gray. The rifling is worn, but visible. There is light-moderate erosion and light pitting scattered through the bore. In this writer’s opinion, the bore rates about 5 out of 10.

Overall Condition: The pistol retains about 95% of its current metal finish. The strawed parts show muting. The blue finish is generally strong throughout. There is infrequent minor erosion under the finish on exposed areas. There is more notable erosion on the frame under the grips. The action shows light operational wear. The screw heads are sharp. Most markings are clear, some of the serial-marked parts have shallow markings. Overall, the pistol is in Very Good-Fine condition as refinished.

Mechanics: The action functions correctly. We did not fire this pistol. As with all used firearms, a thorough cleaning may be necessary to meet your maintenance standards.

Box Paperwork and Accessories: The gun comes with a single 8-round magazine with wood floorplate.

Our Assessment: The Luger (Pistole Parabellum or P-08) is perhaps the most aesthetically and ergonomically pleasing of all autoloading centerfire pistols. It is also one of the strongest, most accurate and most recognizable service pistols ever made. Georg Luger developed his famous pistol in 1898-1899 (starting with the Borchardt/Luger transitional pistol). The Luger is, essentially, a much-improved Borchardt type pistol, which was itself based on the toggle action concept used by Sir Hiram Maxim in the world’s first practical machine gun. The Luger was adopted by the Swiss in 1900, the German Navy in 1906 and the German Army in 1908. There would be some other contracts, including a 5,000 gun order from Brazil in 1908. The Brazilians opted for the 1906 pattern with a grip-safety, 4 3/4″ barrel chambered for .30 Luger, and a coil mainspring.

This particular specimen is from fairly early in the Brazilian contract, number 1,002. The pistol has been refinished, so it looks great for its age. Many of the Brazilian Lugers are now in poor condition due to the climate and long service. With only 5,000 made, it is a scarce Luger variant that will add nicely to a collection. Good luck on your bid!
