Action Type: Top-Break, Over/Under Single Selective Mechanical Trigger and Ejectors, with automatic safety re-set.

Markings: The upper tang is marked “N38096B”.  The left and right side of the receiver is marked “P.BERETTA”. The bottom of the receiver is marked “MADE IN ITALY P.BERETTA GARDONE V.T. 686 Onyx”. The left side of the top barrel is marked “12 GA. 3 1/2” – 28 IN. STEEL SHOT P.BERETTA – MADE IN ITALY”. The right side of the top barrel is marked “BERETTA USA CORP.. ACKK, MD. WARNING – READ INSTRUCTION BOOK FOR SAFE OPERATION BOOK FREE FROM BERETTA”. The bottom of the stock is marked “WOOD XTRA”. The forend iron is marked “N38096B”. The water table has several proofs. The bottom of the monoblock is marked “N38096B”. Under the forend is marked “EXCELSIOR – HIGH STRENGTH ALLOYED STEEL” and the date code “BN”.   

Barrel Length: 28” 

Choke: The bores are threaded for Optima chokes. Installed with Victory extended chokes Cylinder over Improved Cylinder.   

Sights / Optics: This shotgun is equipped with a white dot front sight and fully checkered rib. The previous owner has added a magnetic fiber optic sight with options for green and orange to the rib.   

Stock Configuration & Condition: The furniture set is a two piece Beretta XTRA WOOD stock set. The stock is a checkered semi-pistol grip, fluted straight comb stock with rubber butt pad. The forend is a checkered forend with a full length finger shelf. The length of pull is 14.75″. The drop at comb is 1.5″ the drop at heel is 2.25″. There is a slight right handed cast. The shotgun weighs 7lbs 14oz. The stock shows a small chip at the rear right corner of the upper tang. The forend has a chip on the belly that has come off and been repaired. The wood also shows some very minor scattered compressions. The butt pad shows some very minor discoloration from age. Overall the wood is in Very Good condition as repaired.       

Type of Finish: Blued, Black, Gold and Gray.  

Finish Originality: Original

Bore Condition:  The smooth bores are mirror bright. There is no erosion in the bores. The bores show some minor plastic fouling in the forcing cones. In this writer’s opinion the bores rate 9.75/10. 

Overall Condition: This shotgun retains 99% of its metal finish. The edges of the receiver show some very minor finish thinning. The block and lower barrel show some minor rub wear that is concealed when assembled. The barrels have some scattered minor marks. There are a few spots on the edges of the rib that are missing finish. The markings are clear, the screw heads sharp and the pins un-marred. Overall the shotgun is in Very Good-Very Good+ condition.    

Mechanics: The action functions correctly including ejectors. The action locks up tight with no play. The safety does set automatically after firing. We have not fired this shotgun. As with all used firearms, a thorough cleaning may be necessary to meet your maintenance standards.

Box, Paperwork & Accessories: This shotgun includes a Beretta cardboard box, the two chokes, The shotgun also includes a receipt from Beretta for a repair to the ejector.

This example, made in 2000, features 28″ barrels chambered in 12 gauge with 3.5″ capability and is fitted for Optima interchangeable chokes. The 3.5″ chambering is specifically intended for waterfowl hunters who require heavier shot payloads and increased velocity, delivering greater downrange energy and pattern density for geese and high-flying ducks.
