Stock Configuration & Condition:
The walnut stock set shows standard hand-cut checkering at the wrist and splinter forend, with a Deeley latch and straight English-style buttstock fitted with a checkered buttplate. The finish displays light handling marks from age and storage but no cracks or repairs. The forend latch plate retains vivid original case colors, and the wood shows fine figure beneath the oil finish.
Type of Finish: Blued barrels, color case-hardened receiver and furniture
Bore Condition: The bores are bright and smooth with no visible erosion. In this writer’s opinion, the bores rate 10/10.
Mechanics: The action locks up solidly, both triggers break cleanly, and the tang safety operates correctly. We did not fire this shotgun. As with all used firearms, a thorough cleaning may be necessary to meet your maintenance requirements.
Overall Condition:
This shotgun retains about 98% plus of its original finish. The case-hardening remains strong on the receiver with scattered storage dust. The barrels retain deep factory blue with faint muzzle oxidation from long-term storage. The stock finish remains attractive with honest wear consistent with careful handling. All serialized components match, and the shotgun presents as a very fine example of a magnum-proofed AYA.
Accessories:
Original factory cardboard box with matching end label, original AYA wrapping paper, and serial-matching forend.
Our Assessment:
Aguirre y Aranzabal (AYA) of Eibar, Spain, has long been among the foremost names in European double guns, producing elegant yet rugged shotguns modeled after London bests. The Matador II was built expressly for the American market and imported by Hawes Firearms in Los Angeles, later by ODIN International in Virginia following Hawes’ closure. Chambered in 10 Gauge 3½” Magnum, this heavyweight field gun was one of AYA’s most powerful offerings, designed for goose and turkey hunters seeking long-range performance.
Its 32″ Full & Full barrels, nitro proofed for magnum loads, and solid steel frame construction exemplify AYA’s old-world craftsmanship. The case-colored receiver, straight-grain walnut, and tight action show the enduring quality of Spanish gunmaking at its peak. Original, matching, and boxed examples like this are seldom encountered today — a testament to AYA’s fine balance of artistry and utility.
