Our Assessment: The Auto Ordnance Thompson 1927A-1 “Chicago Typewriter” is a semi-automatic version of the iconic Thompson submachine gun, often associated with 1920s and 1930s gangsters, Prohibition-era mobsters, and law enforcement. This particular model is designed to evoke the classic look and feel of the original Thompson while being compliant with modern firearm regulations. The “Chicago Typewriter” nickname comes from the weapon’s extensive use by organized crime figures in Chicago during the Prohibition era. Its distinctive appearance and rapid rate of fire made it a favorite among gangsters and a symbol of the violent conflicts between rival gangs and law enforcement agencies of the time. One of the most distinctive features of the Thompson 1927A-1 is its vertical foregrip and walnut furniture. The foregrip, combined with the walnut stock and pistol grip, provides a stable and comfortable handling experience, enhancing control and accuracy during shooting. The wood furniture not only adds to the gun’s vintage aesthetic but also offers a sturdy and reliable grip. The barrel of the 1927A-1 is finned, a design element that was originally intended to dissipate heat during rapid fire in the fully automatic versions. This finned barrel, along with the compensator at the muzzle, helps reduce recoil and muzzle rise, making the gun easier to control and shoot accurately. In terms of historical significance, the Thompson submachine gun played a prominent role in both criminal and law enforcement circles during the early 20th century. It was famously used by figures such as Al Capone and John Dillinger, as well as by FBI agents and other law enforcement officers in their efforts to combat organized crime.

Overall, the Auto Ordnance Thompson 1927A-1 “Chicago Typewriter” is a faithful semi-automatic reproduction of a legendary firearm. Its robust construction, classic design features, and historical associations make it a prized possession for collectors, history enthusiasts, and shooting sports enthusiasts alike. Whether displayed as a piece of history or used for recreational shooting, the 1927A-1 captures the essence of a bygone era with its distinctive style and powerful performance.
