Stock Configuration & Condition: The stocks are two piece basketweave-textured walnut with a splinter forend, capped pistol grip, straight comb with shadow-line cheekpiece, and serrated horn buttplate. The belly has a steel trapdoor over a storage compartment for four cartridges. There are ebony inlays in the nose of the forend and on each side of the wrist There is a sling swivel in the belly and another mounted to the bottom of the barrel rib forward of the forend. The forend has a repaired crack across the bottom. There are a few tiny grain-line cracks at edges. The forend has a small loss at the top-rear corner on the left. The stocks have some light nicks and scratches. The texturing shows some wear, but is generally well defined. There are no cracks. The LOP measures 14 1/4″ and 13 1/4″ from the fronts of the triggers to the back of the buttplate. The plate has scattered light wear, surface cracking and some worm-holes. Overall, the stocks are in about Very Good condition.
Type of Finish: Blue & Case Color
Finish Originality: Original
Bore Condition: The shotgun bore is bright with no erosion. The rifle bore is gray with well defined rifling. There is scattered light erosion in the rifle bore. In this writer’s opinion, the shotgun bore rates 10 out of 10, the rifle bore rates 6 or 7 out of 10.
Overall Condition: This drilling retains about 87% of its metal finish. The finish is thinning at most edges. There is scattered finish wear on the barrel rib. There are some light nicks and scratches, most notable on the right of the barrels over the front sling swivel. Much of the receiver’s case color has muted with some strong color in protected areas. There is infrequent minor surface oxidation. The screw heads are sharp. The markings are generally clear, some of the proofs are worn. Overall, this gun is in Very Good condition.
Mechanics: The action functions correctly. The front trigger can be pressed forward until it clicks to set. The barrels lock up with no play. We have not fired this drilling. As with all used firearms, a thorough cleaning may be necessary to meet your maintenance standards.
Box, Paperwork & Accessories: None.
Our Assessment: There is little information available about August F. W. Timner, a Coblenz (Koblenz) based German gunmaker from the late 19th and early 20th centuries. What is known is that he knew how to make guns! He was among the first to craft a vierling (four-barrel combination gun) and at least one rifle has been attributed to Timner as having been made for Kaiser Wilhelm, himself. This example of his work is a superposed combination gun with a 16 gauge barrel over a 7.6mm rifle barrel. The barrel’s chamber should be cast to confirm before firing, but 7.6mm was occasionally used to designate .30-30 in metric and a .30-30 cartridge chambers properly. This would make for a very versatile hunting gun. The gun is in Very Good condition with light wear consistent with its age. This will make a great addition to a European sporting or combination gun collection. Please see our photos and good luck!
