Our Assessment: The Action Arms IWI-Israel Galil SA in 5.56 is a well-regarded and robust semi-automatic rifle, developed originally by Israel Military Industries (IMI) and later imported into the United States by Action Arms. The Galil series was developed in the late 1960s and early 1970s, based on the Finnish Valmet RK 62, which itself was derived from the Soviet AK-47. The Galil was created to meet the Israeli Defense Forces’ need for a more reliable and durable rifle that could withstand the harsh desert environment of the Middle East. The rifle incorporates many features from the AK-47, known for its reliability, while also integrating several improvements to meet Israeli requirements. Chambered in 5.56x45mm NATO, the Galil offers the benefits of this widely used and effective caliber, including low recoil, high velocity, and good terminal performance. The 5.56mm round is well-suited for a variety of combat scenarios, providing effective range and accuracy while allowing soldiers to carry more ammunition due to its lighter weight compared to larger calibers. One of the distinctive features of the Galil is its folding stock, which can be folded to the side to further reduce the rifle’s length, making it even more compact and easy to transport. The folding stock is made of durable steel, ensuring that it can withstand rough handling and harsh conditions without compromising the rifle’s stability and shooting performance.
Overall, the Action Arms IWI-Israel Galil AR in 5.56 is a highly effective and reliable semi-automatic rifle, well-suited for a wide range of combat scenarios. Its compact size, robust construction, and versatile features make it a popular choice among military and law enforcement units worldwide. The Galil AR’s design successfully blends the reliability and simplicity of the AK-47 with modern enhancements, resulting in a formidable firearm capable of performing in the most demanding conditions. -R.E.
