Our Assessment: Commencing in 1836 in Paterson, NJ began manufacturing cap and ball revolvers. In 1839 a loading lever was added to aid in loading of the firearm with the cylinder in place. An average of only 6 firearms per week were produced until the company went bankrupt in 1841. A small number went out to the Texas Rangers and were used in various battles with the Comanche and other local tribes. Their increased volume of firepower let to notable victories.  The success of the revolver design coupled with the weaknesses of the Paterson design led to the development and widespread issue of the 1847 Walker Colt which the Rangers made famous.

This replica of the 1839 Paterson .36 cal is a beautiful example of one of the earliest revolvers to see success. This is a prime example of a period in history where firearms designs were rapidly advancing. The grips appear to be non-factory but very well executed.
