Our Assessment: The Winchester Model 1873 is often called “The Gun That Won the West,” and this 2014 Deluxe Grade 4 example represents a modern expression of that frontier icon. Manufactured in Japan by Miroku to Winchester specifications and then sent by Navy Arms to Turnbull Restoration Co. for finishing, this rifle blends contemporary precision with period-correct artistry. The 20 inch octagonal barrel, brass beaded front sight, and semi-buckhorn rear sight preserve the classic silhouette of the original 1873 while Turnbull’s renowned color case hardening and deep polish blue elevate the rifle into the realm of fine sporting arms.

Chambered in .45 Colt, a cartridge introduced in 1873 alongside Colt’s Single Action Army revolver, this rifle pairs one of the most enduring American revolver cartridges with the legendary toggle-link lever action platform. The .45 Colt earned its reputation on the frontier for authority and reliability, and it remains a practical and historically resonant chambering in the Model 1873 pattern. The bore is bright with sharp, deep rifling and no erosion, rating 10 out of 10 in this writer’s opinion. The action is tight and functions correctly, reflecting the high build quality associated with Miroku manufacture and Turnbull finishing.
