Our Assessment: This Winchester Model 64 Deluxe “Deer Rifle” dates to 1937 and represents one of Winchester’s most upscale sporting lever actions of the prewar period. The Model 64 was marketed as a refined evolution of the Model 1894, and the Deluxe Deer Rifle configuration elevated it further with checkered walnut stocks, sling provisions, and enhanced finish intended for the serious sportsman. Built during the late Depression era, rifles like this reflect Winchester’s effort to combine traditional lever action reliability with more modern styling and premium appointments.
Chambered in .32 Winchester Special, this rifle showcases a cartridge introduced in 1901 to offer hunters a slightly larger bore and heavier bullet than the .30-30, while remaining effective with early smokeless powder loads and popular with handloaders of the period. The 24 inch barrel provides excellent balance and sight radius, and the bore remains bright with sharp rifling and only minor fouling, rating 8.5 out of 10. Factory markings and Winchester proof marks are clear, and the rifle retains the correct sporting sight configuration with a Marbles style rear sight, while the receiver shows period modifications from drilling and tapping for optics.
Condition is strong overall, retaining approximately 90 percent of its original blued finish with light scratches, handling marks, and small nicks consistent with careful use. The checkered walnut stocks remain structurally sound, with crisp checkering showing only minor wear to the peaks and no chips or cracks. Sling plates with rings at the forend and belly further distinguish this Deluxe configuration. While the additional drilling and tapping affects originality, the rifle remains mechanically sound, with a smooth action, crisp trigger, and properly functioning safeties. This is a well preserved and visually striking example of a prewar Winchester Model 64 Deer Rifle that clearly reflects its era and purpose.
