Action Type: 6-Shot, Double / Single Action, Swing-Out Fluted Cylinder Revolver

Markings: The left of the barrel is marked “SMITH & WESSO”, the right is marked “44 S.&W. SPECIAL”. The rear of the cylinder is marked “5”. The yoke is marked “B18 / 18434″, the cut is marked “ALA4910 / MOD. 24-3”. The left of the grip frame is marked “18434 / B18 / F13”, the right is marked “Q” in circle, “K” in triangle and “3144”. The side plate has the S&W logo, the right of the frame has the four line Marcas Registradas address.

Barrel Length: 3” with rib and shrouded ejector rod.

Sights / Optics: The front sight is a serrated ramp blade with a red insert, pinned onto the rib, the top of the rib is serrated and matted for glare reduction. The rear sight is a square notched, white-outlined leaf in a micrometer-click adjustable base.

Stock Configuration & Condition: The grips are smooth combat grips with finger grooves and S&W logo medallions. The grips have no notable wear or damage, only light handling marks. There are no chips or cracks. Overall, the grips are in about Excellent condition.

Type of Finish: Blue with Case Colored Hammer & Trigger

Finish Originality: We believe the finish is Original. The missing “N” on the left of the barrel is likely due to a poorly struck stamp or a broken stamp. There is nothing to indicate that the metal has been refinished.

Bore Condition: The bore is bright and the rifling is sharp. There is no erosion in the bore.

Overall Condition: This handgun retains about 98% of its metal finish. The cylinder has a thin, faint turn line, mostly not through the finish. The trigger and hammer have very light operational wear with otherwise strong case-coloring. Otherwise, there are only a few scattered light handling marks. The screw heads are sharp. The markings are clear. Overall, this revolver is in about Excellent condition.

Mechanics: The action functions correctly. The cylinder has very little to no play on each of the six chambers. The double action trigger is smooth, the single action is crisp. We did not fire this handgun. As with all used firearms, a thorough cleaning may be necessary to meet your maintenance requirements.

Box, Paperwork & Accessories: This revolver comes in a blue one-piece cardboard S&W box with serial-matching label, wax paper, an assortment of factory paperwork including manual and a Smith & Wesson cleaning kit with rod, copper brush, mop, and screwdriver. The box has scattered light wear, mostly at edges and corners and a tear at the left-rear corner at the “hinge” of the lid, in about Good-Very Good condition. The cleaning accessories are still sealed in plastic.

Our Assessment: Between 1984 and 1985, about 5,000 Lew Horton customized 24-3 revolvers with 3” snub nose barrels were produced. These have stunning material quality and are among some of the most coveted modern S&W revolvers on the market…if you can find one. This is a 24-3 from that limited production run with its original box and cleaning accessories. The revolver is in Excellent condition, retaining approximately 98% of its metal finish, with Excellent grips, a bright bore and strong mechanics. The only flaw we can find in this gun is the left barrel marking missing the “N” from “SMITH & WESSON”, however this would easily be explained by a poor stamping or broken tool. The “N” would be applied where the barrel widens to meet the frame and would not be an easy location to get a good stamp every time, likely stressing the last letter on the stamp with each strike, possibly breaking the stamp itself. This is a rare Smith & Wesson in truly Excellent condition with original box and will surely make a Smith & Wesso collector very happy. Please see our photos and good luck!
