Markings: The left of the receiver is marked “Perazzi Mirage-S”. The left shoulder is marked “MIRAGE”, the right shoulder is marked “P.U 97938”. The water table is marked with three Italian proofs. The right of the receiver is marked “Special Sporting”. The bottom of the trigger guard is marked with a gold script “P”. The top of the trigger group is marked “97938” forward of the hammers. The inside of the forend iron is marked “97938”, the inside of the forend is stamped “121899”. The left of the top barrel is marked “Perazzi BRESCIA MADE IN ITALY” at the chamber and “CAM. 70 18.4” with an Italian proof on the left under the forend. The left of the bottom barrel is marked “KG1.630 18.4” and with an Italian proof. The bottom of the bottom barrel is marked “12 GAUGE-70”. The bottom of the monoblock is marked “97938” with three Italian proofs, “BI” in square date code and “MIRAGE”. The right of the top barrel is marked “IMPORTER-Perazzi-USA / MONROVIA-CALIFORNIA” at the chamber.

Barrel Length: 29 1/2″ (75cm), Ventilated Rib

Choke: Threaded for removable chokes, currently installed Cyl/Cyl (marked “0”).

Sights / Optics: This shotgun is mounted with a Hi-Viz fiber-optic sight at the front of the rib with a small, silver-colored mid-bead. The top of the rib is finely checkered to reduce glare.

Stock Configuration & Condition: The stocks are checkered select walnut with finger grooves on the forend, pistol grip, Perazzi adjustable comb, and solid black rubber Pachmayr buttpad. The Type IV forend has a thin, repaired crack approximately 1″ long at the front edge, left of center, a couple of scattered light compressions and light handling wear in the well-defined, fine checkering. There appears to be a repaired crack on the interior of the forend along the left edge of the iron. The buttstock has a repair in the top of the wrist at the rear of the tang with a cross-piece going through the wrist and a 3/4″x3/8″ insert on the top which has been finely matched to the checkering, a short, thin crack on the bottom of the wrist at the rear of the trigger guard assembly and some scattered light compressions and handling marks. The fine checkering is slightly smoothed from handling, but well defined. The LOP measures 14 3/4” from the front of the trigger to the back of the rubber pad. The drop at the front of the comb is 1 1/2″, 1 7/8″ at the rear, however the comb is adjustable. The drop at heel is 2 1/8″. The cast is about neutral, slightly off. The pad shows wear around the edges consistent with intentional shaping in about Very Good condition. The stocks rate in about Very Good overall condition as repaired.

Bore Condition: The bores are bright. There is no erosion. There is some stubborn fouling which should clear out with a patient cleaning.

Overall Condition: This shotgun retains about 82% of its metal finish. The majority of the balance of the finish is in handling wear on the bottom edges of the receiver and forend iron, with light pitting which has been scrubbed out on the bottom-left edge and handling wear on the left shoulder of the barrel. The barrels do have some scattered light wear, including wear from the forend, obscured when the gun is assembled. The finish is thinning at most edges with a few nicks along the edges of the rib. The forend latch, thumb lever and safety have some light handling wear and the top tang has operational wear from the safety slider. The markings are clear. Overall, this shotgun rates in about Very Good condition.

Mechanics: The action functions correctly including ejectors. The barrels lock up tight to the receiver with no play. We have not fired this shotgun. As with all used firearms, a thorough cleaning may be necessary to meet your maintenance standards.

Box, Paperwork & Accessories: This shotgun comes in a hard-sided Americase case with combination-lock and key-lock latches (we do not know the combination and no keys were provided). The case has a red felt-covered interior with storage for the stocked receiver assembly and three accessory compartments in one half and two barrel sets (only one provided), forend and two accessory compartments in the other. Inside the case is a shooting glove, an assortment of paperwork not including manual, an assortment of tools and Hi-Viz sight inserts. The exterior of the case has been personalized with a name-plate and has scuffs, scratches and impact marks from storage and transport. The interior of the case has light wear from the contents. Overall, the case is in about Very Good condition.

Our Assessment: Perazzi sounds like a high end sports car, and in the gun world it is. They have long been a staple of just about any kind of shotgun sport you can name, famous for their craftsmanship, beauty and durability. As such, they command a high price, with some buyers going all the way to Italy to be measured in person so that their gun can be specially and exactly fit to them. That said, like a high-end sports car, it can be much more economical to buy used. This Mirage-S Special Sporting is in Very Good condition with wear consistent with extensive and responsible use. The stock has been repaired, but feels solid. The finish has wear, but the bores are bright and the mechanics are strong. This gun locks up like a bank vault and has years of use ahead of it. Just be careful, once you have one Perazzi you’ll want another. Please see our photos and good luck!
