Markings: The left side of the barrel is marked “COMBAT PYTHON / *.357 MAGNUM CTG.*”. The right side of the barrel is marked “COLT’S PT. F.A. MFG. CO. / HARTFORD, CONN. U.S.A.”. The flat under the crane and the crane are marked with the serial number. The left sideplate is marked with a rampant colt logo. The left front of the trigger guard is marked with “VP” in a triangle which appears to have been struck once lightly and again more deeply over the first mark. The rear of the trigger guard is marked “V” deeper at the top of the mark and fading to nonexistent at the bottom. Under the grips, the right side of the grip frame near the butt is marked “N”.
Barrel Length: The vent rib barrel with full underlug is 3”
Sights / Optics: This revolver is mounted with a white outlined square notched rear sight adjustable for windage and elevation that is pinned to the top strap of the frame. The front sight is a serrated ramp blade with red insert pinned to the top of the rib with two pins. The top of the barrel rib and the top strap have a matte finish to reduce glare.
Stock Configuration & Condition: The grips are Colt Python Elite finger groove grips with gold colt medallions. The grips do not show any noticeable wear or damage. There are no chips or cracks. Overall, the grips are in Excellent condition.
Type of Finish: Python Blue
Finish Originality: All Original
Bore Condition: The bore is bright and the rifling is sharp. There is no erosion.
Overall Condition: This revolver retains about 99% of its finish. The only flaws we could find consist of a light turn line, only through the finish at the edges of some cylinder stop notches and in some lead-in grooves. The turn line seems most pronounced at the narrow point at the start of some lead-in grooves. There is very light freckling on the top face of the rear sight. The frame has begun to go slightly plum, though the sideplate, barrel, cylinder, trigger and crane remain blue. Serrations on the cylinder latch, trigger, and backstrap remain sharp. Screw heads are sharp. Markings are clear with the exception of the stamps as described above. Overall, this gun is in Excellent condition.
Mechanics: The lock-up on this revolver is SOLID, with no play when trigger is depressed. The action functions correctly. We have not fired this revolver. As with all used firearms, a thorough cleaning may be necessary to meet your maintenance standards.
Box, Paperwork & Accessories: This revolver comes in a maroon one-piece box with matching end label and two-piece styrofoam tray with paperwork still retained under red tape reading “IMPORTANT / READ INSTRUCTION MANUAL” on the exterior of one half of the tray. That half is also marked “COLT” with stylized serpent C. The exterior of the box has scuffs and wear at the corners and is in about Fine condition. The styrofoam tray has compressed corners and couple of chips and is in about Fine condition.
Our Assessment: This is something you don’t see every day. In fact, this is something that many people never see. In the late 1980s, Colt made a special production run of five hundred 3″ Pythons for Lew Horton, marked “COMBAT PYTHON” on the left side of the barrel. Three inch Pythons are rare, but the Combat Python is even moreso. We will not have the time to receive a letter from Colt in time for this listing, but we will guarantee that this revolver will letter. As rare as these revolvers are, they are even more rare in this condition with original box and paperwork. Please see our photos and good luck!
