The left of the receiver has the serial number and “GRISWOLD TACTICAL 308”, the bolt handle is marked for the correct serial number. The right of the barrel is marked “.308 WIN / GB / GRISWOLD BROTHERS GUNSMITHING / VENTURA, CA”. The right of the receiver is marked “SPF, LLC / WYLIE, TX”.
Barrel Length: 20”, Heavy Tapered Profile, from 1″ at the step before a taper down to the pinned, side ported muzzle brake. The barrel is nearly 1 1/4″ at the receiver. It is completely free floated until the aluminum block bedded action makes contact.
Sights / Optics: The rifle does not have provisions for iron sights. The top of the receiver is mounted with a black alloy Picatinny rail, holding a NightForce NXS 3.5-15×50 F1 .1 Mil-Radian MLR 2.0 (http://www.nightforceoptics.com/nxs/3-5-15×50-f1) with beautiful knob knurling that matches the simplistic carvings on the flanks of the forend. The scope is free of notable damages. The image is beyond crisp and clear, a left side mounted knob provides first focal plane focus, the zoom knob swiftly gets you from 3.5 to 15 in a smooth sweep. The scope comes with its original factory box, instructional DVD, scope bikini and owner’s manual, all items are in about Excellent condition. Stock Configuration & Condition: The rifle sits in a 5 piece TMAG chassis. The receiver portion of the stock set is mounted with a magazine well, fit for double stacked Accuracy International .308 magazines, one of which is provided. The magazine release is mounted under the trigger guard for ambidextrous handling. The forend has a QD swivel on the belly, the flanks have nice diamond and pyramid grooves, the underside has a series of tapped holes for different rail positioning and length options. The rear of the receiver block has a flat dark earth Ergo pistol grip which, as the name suggests is very comfortable and made of high strength rubber with a pebbled surface. The butt stock folds just behind the grip, with a bolt set sliding cheek piece. The stock runs strait out from its pivot point and has a curled belly for gripping when in the benchrest or prone position, the underside has tapped holes for the addition of monopods or other accessories (not included). When folded out, the OAL of the rifle is 41 ¾”, when folded the OAL is 31 ½”. The LOP measures 14” from the front of the wide serrated trigger to the back of the black rubber recoil pad, which has Pachmayr’s White Line markings. The pad has flush fit to its black spacer and provides a nice comfortable gate for shooters with larger body frames. The stocks rate in Excellent condition, showing only a few small handling marks. The metal to metal fit is superb, the stock is very versatile and looks great; for a full review, visit https://www.gunsamerica.com/blog/mcrees-sniper-rifle-chassis-system/.
Type of Finish: The rifle scope’s ‘flat dark earth’ is somewhere in between the other items, giving a nice 3-tone layout; the scope’s adjustment markings and their bordered areas were left matte black, as is the hinge point for the receiver chassis and butt stock. The barrel and bolt handle are slightly darker than the scope, the bolt body is matte black with spiral fluting.
Finish Originality: The included merchant receipt for “Paint/Cerakote NightForce FDE”, in 2014, only indicates an FDE job on the scope, we believe the other items were finished by the Griswold Brothers Gunsmithing location in Ventura, California when this rifle was commissioned by the original owner.
Bore Condition: The bore is bright and the rifling is sharp, we did not remove the muzzle brake as not to damage the metal. The bore does not show evidence of long term use and is free of any visible blemishes. We believe the twist rate to be 1:10”.
Overall Condition: This rifle retains about 97% of its metal finish. The surfaces have a few rubbing marks, none have gone past the finish. The bolt body has light rubbing from cycling, this accounts for the majority of the finish loss. The screw heads are sharp. The markings are crisp. Overall, this rifle rates in about Excellent condition.
Mechanics: The action functions correctly. The trigger has minimal take-up and a perfect over-travel stop, breaking at 3lbs 2oz. The bolt glided with fluidity, the folding stock is completely free of wobble, it folds to the left, allowing use of the bolt while folded. We have not fired this rifle. As with all previously owned firearms, a thorough cleaning may be necessary to meet your maintenance standards.
Box, Paperwork & Accessories: The rifle comes with Brownells OD green and tan nylon soft case which has storage and ammunition pouches. Also included is one blue steel 5-round magazine, made by Accuracy International. The scope comes with its original factory box, instructional DVD, scope bikini and owner’s manual, all items are in about Excellent condition.
Our Assessment: Where to begin and where to end, this is one of the coolest tactical .308 builds we have had the honor of handling. If the build quality of the McRee TMAG chassis, heavy barrel and flat dark earth finishes are not enough, it is properly glassed with a NightForce 3.5-15×50 F1 MLR 2.0. Whoever commissioned this build got a jaw dropping rifle. It is capable of hits out to 1,000 yards ‘no problem’, according to some who have had the honor of firing one of these Griswold rifles. It is built for battle at this point, it should be great for tactical training but if you want to train for long distance, everyone knows NightForce and Griswold will help get you there.
