Markings: The rib on top of the barrel is marked “EMIL V. NORDHEIM, ZELLA-MEHLIS.”. Zella-Mehlis is the town in Germany where Nordheim had his shop. The left side of the receiver is marked with a “crown”, “crown / N” and “St. m.G. / 146gr”. The extractor is marked “06”. The underside of the bolt handle is marked with faded stampings. The top of the bolt handle, the receiver, the barrel shank, the rib on top of the barrel, the stock mounted safety, the bullet trap door and the screws are all hand engraved. The bottom metal is ornately engraved with a “juvenile stag” at the center.

Barrel Length: Approximately 22 Inches

Sights / Optics: The front sight is a beaded blade set atop a ramped base. The front of the base is integral to the barrel’s rib. The rear sight is a dovetail set dual “U” notched blade assembly. The front blade flips up into place to engage longer distances.

Stock Configuration & Condition: The Mannlicher stock has a pistol grip, raised cheek piece, hand checkering on the grip & forearm, a horn nosecap, 2 European style sling swivels, a horn grip cap, a horn buttplate with a basket weave design and a bullet trap under the butt with hinged door for storage. The bullet trap has space for 5 rounds. A screw secures the front of the stock to the barrel. There is a small “schnabelesk” bump to the rear of the front sling swivel. The cheek piece is missing edge chips. The wood shows various scrapes, small scratches and compression marks. Most are on the rear of the stock. The LOP measures 14 1/8 inches from the face of the front of the trigger and 13 1/2 inches from the face of the rear to the back of the buttplate. The stock rates in about Very Good to Fine overall condition.

Type of Finish: Blue / Case Colored. The trigger guard is polished horn. The nosecap and buttplate are horn.

Finish Originality: Original

Bore Condition: The bore is bright and the rifling is deep. There is no visible erosion.

Overall Condition: This rifle retains about 98% of its metal finish. The barrel’s rib shows areas of light thinning on the edges. There are light marks and a few light scrapes on the remaining metal. Some of the screw heads show use. The markings are crisp and elegant. Overall, this rifle rates in about Fine to Excellent condition.

Mechanics: Both safeties function. The action functions correctly. We have not fired this rifle. As with all previously owned firearms, a thorough cleaning may be necessary to meet your maintenance standards.

Our Assessment: This rare custom Mauser was made by Emil Von Nordheim. The work was done In Germany prior to WWII. Emil Von Nordheim was one of the Gunmakers in the town of Zella-Mehlis, Germany. According to our research Emil Von Nordheim established a shop around 1879. He was an arms manufacturer and distributor of guns and accessories.
This rifle is beautiful. It has ornate engraving on the metal, a half octagon barrel, hand checkering on the Mannlicher stock and even has a bullet trap under the butt with space for 5 rounds. The rifles trigger guard, the nosecap, the grip cap and the buttplate (with a Nice basket weave pattern) are all made of polished horn. The bore is bright and the deep blue finish is almost intact. This is a beautiful Mauser that will make its new owner proud.
