Stock Configuration & Condition: The stocks are beautifully figured and lightly finished wood. The wood is original to the gun, as is the finish and the grade of the wood is above standard. There is oil staining at the wrist from handling. The right side of the forearm shows a scratch at the rear half and the left side shows a vertical mark, about 2” forward of the receiver. There are light handling marks to the stock. The LOP measures 12 ¾”. The stocks rate in about Excellent overall condition, and are exception in both condition and quality of wood.
Type of Finish: Blue
Finish Originality: Absolutely Factory Original
Bore Condition: The bore is near bright and just a little gray. The rifling is visible the entire length and only slightly worn. There is very scattered pitting in the bore, heavier towards the muzzle. This is a very shootable bore.
Overall Condition: This gun retains about 75% of its original metal finish. The balance of the finish shows wear on the magazine tube from disassembly of the takedown. The barrel shows the vast majority of its finish, with edge wear turned to patina and scattered thinning. The frame shows a lot of original high gloss finish, with surface scratching on both flats, heaviest on the left side at the hammer screw. The frame also shows thinning at the edges and areas of high contact. The gun shows a lot of original finish throughout, with obvious care taken in storage and little use throughout its life. This is a beautiful gun, all around, both in condition and construction. The Screw heads are sharp and only slightly worn. The markings are crisp. Overall, this gun rates in about Fine – Excellent condition.
Mechanics: The action functions as designed, as does the takedown. We have not test fired this rifle.
Our Assessment: This is a spectacular rifle, one of the best 1892’s and one of the best Winchesters we have ever sold. This gun has it all… Original finish and lots of it, .44 Chambering, early production (1896) and… IT IS A TAKEDOWN. If there was ever an investment quality rifle, without any question, this is it. The gun is as honest as could be hoped for and regardless of the 1892 you have in the collection, this one is probably better. What a find!
