Our Assessment: The 1911 and 1911-A1 pistols served the military of the United States from 1911 to 1985, through two World Wars and the Korean and Vietnam wars. They gained a reputation as a reliable handgun with plenty of stopping power, and are held in high regard by those who have used them. The design was the end-result of a series of developments by famous gun designer John Browning, starting with the Model 1900. The advances made by Browning were revolutionary at the time, and were so successful that they are considered commonplace today. Browning not only developed first a pivoting and then a tilting barrel to allow for a locked system, he developed the concept of “the slide”, which is now synonymous with semi-automatic handguns. The design has seen some updates including a firing-pin block safety, higher-profile sights, and more ergonomic grips, but the basic design and fantastic trigger remain the same after more than a century. The 1911 has also been a popular choice for custom pistols, with a wide variety of sights, barrels, parts, and popular modifications. It is beloved by law enforcement, competitors, and recreational shooters across the nation over a century since its inception.
As with any hobby, with the 1911 you can go as far as your pocketbook will take you. Just about every brand has a 1911 on offer and they range from entry-level to high-end, this example is one of the latter. This is a Colt Classic Government Model that was sent to Nighthawk and customized. Here is what NHC had to say about their pistol: ” the new Nighthawk Custom Colt Series 70 offers several functional and aesthetic upgrades to a timeless classic. We have taken the Colt 1911 Classic model and given it an overhaul. An all-new trigger system has been installed with a match grade solid short trigger, fully machined disconnector, sear, hammer strut, and pin. The rear sight has been replaced with a Harrison Design retro while the front sight features a Nighthawk Custom 14k solid gold bead. The Colt Series 70 has been outfitted with a retro hammer, Nighthawk Custom beavertail grip safety, mainspring housing, and match barrel bushing. Upgrades such as an ultra hi-cut trigger guard, matching vertical serrations on the front strap and mainspring housing, French border on the slide, and Nighthawk Custom engraved on the dust cover, take an already beautiful firearm to the next level. While not offering a slide-to-frame fit, Nighthawk Custom has upgraded the performance of the Colt Series 70 with a full reliability enhancement and action tune. The performance upgrade began with the flattening and polishing of the breech face. The feed ramp was then machined to the proper dimension before being polished. The barrel was throated and polished while the chamber was reamed and polished. The Colt extractor was polished and tuned before both the Colt ejector and slide stop were adjusted and tuned. The Colt mag release was also tuned and polished for smoother function. A new Nighthawk Custom 17 lb. recoil spring was added, as was a Nighthawk Custom extra power firing pin spring. The main spring was replaced by a Nighthawk Custom 19 lb. main spring to complete the action tune. After hand-beveling the edges of the slide, the Colt Series 70 received a custom Smoked Nitride finish to make this pistol a functional work of art.” What a work of art it is! This pistol promises to be a fine shooter and will make an excellent addition to any 1911 collection. Please see our photos and good luck!
