Sights / Optics: There is no provision for iron sights. The top of the receiver is drilled and tapped with two-piece Weaver bases installed. The left of the receiver at the rear is drilled, tapped and filled for a receiver-sight mount (none present).

Stock Configuration & Condition: The stock is a custom checkered deluxe walnut with ebony nosecap, capped pistol grip, straight comb with shadow-line cheekpiece, buttpad and a sling mount in the belly (there is another fixed to the bottom of the barrel in front of the forend). The belly has an initial plate engraved “S”. The stock has light handling wear with some scattered nicks, scuffs and scratches. There are some spots of residue at the front of the forend. The checkering is well defined. There are no chips or cracks. The LOP measures 14′ from the front of the trigger to the back of the pad, 13 1/4″ to the back of the wood. The pad has light wear and is still fairly supple. Overall, the stock is in Very Good-Fine condition.

Type of Finish: Blue & Stainless

Finish Originality: Receiver finish is Original. The barrel is not original to the gun and the bolt handle has been modified.

Bore Condition: The bore is bright with sharp rifling. There is no erosion in the bore. In this writer’s opinion, the bore rates 10 out of 10.

Overall Condition: This rifle retains about 94% of its metal finish. The barrel has some minor scuffing. There is light wear on the bottom metal and scattered minor wear on the receiver. The action shows operational wear. The screw heads are sharp. The markings are clear. Overall, this rifle is in Very Good-Fine condition as customized.

Mechanics: The action functions correctly. There is a safety mounted on the right side of the receiver. Pushed forwards, the safety is OFF. If pulled back all the way, it locks both the bolt and the trigger. If pulled back half-way, it blocks only the trigger. We did not fire this rifle. As with all used firearms, a thorough cleaning may be necessary to meet your maintenance standards.

Box, Paperwork & Accessories: 100 rounds of brass is included with the rifle.

Our Assessment: This is a custom Winchester Model 70 built on a pre-64 action. The consignor informs us that the barrel was made by Tom Burgess made its 26″ barrel chambered for 6.5mm Remington Magnum and it has been installed in a beautiful custom walnut stock. Rounding out the customization is checkering on the bolt handle. Taking advantage of the ballistics of 6.5mm projectiles, this will be a great hunting rifle where longer shots are expected.
