Our Assessment: This flintlock musket was made by Allan Sandy just outside Waynesboro, Virginia. It is a fowling type with a 48″ barrel of .77 caliber, approximately 10 gauge. Despite its four foot barrel and more than five feet of overall length, the piece is fairly light and handy, just over 8 pounds, with a barrel that starts octagonal and has a “wedding band” transition to round about 14″ down. Sandy is well known in the muzzle loading community for the quality of his work, and it is on fine display in this musket. The stock has graceful lines with tasteful embellishments. Apart from some marks on the frizzen consistent with spark-testing, it appears to have been fired little, if at all. If you’ve been looking for one of Sandy’s pieces or for a flintlock fowling gun, look no further. Please see our photos and good luck!
