Bore Condition: The bore is mostly bright and the rifling is well defined. There is light erosion in the bore. In this writer’s opinion and for the age, this bore rates a 8 out of 10.
Most antique firearms have bores that will show erosion. This is not only due to age but to the use of black powder. When fired, black powder reacts corrosively. NRA Antique Firearm Conditions Standards are quite lenient for bores. In some cases, the NRA standards disregard the bore’s condition for collectors firearms.
Overall Condition: This rifle retains about 96% of its metal finish. The metal shows scratches, scrapes and light discoloration in the browning of the barrel. The lock and hammer shows good case color. The screw heads are lightly tool marked. The markings are present. Overall, this rifle rates in about Very Good Plus condition.
Mechanics: The rear set trigger does not engage but the front trigger works fine. The action does function correctly. We did not fire this firearm. As with all used firearms, a thorough cleaning may be necessary to meet your maintenance requirements.

Our Assessment: This rifle is a Contemporary Hawken rifle that is in .54 caliber with a percussion ignition. The barrel is marked with “Emo’ Hoene’ Heopo’” on the top flat with “Hunter” on the left. The barrel is a W.M. Large J.J.J.J. L. and was a superb choice by the maker of the rifle. The wood is well balanced, the action is strong and the triggers are crisp. If you are interested in hunting, this would be a good choice for larger or medium sized game or target shooting. Please see our photos and good luck!
