The stock has some light nicks and scratches. There are some voids in the finish around the rear of the buttstock and on the bottom-left below the front of the receiver. The checkering is well defined. There are no chips or cracks. The LOP measures 13 5/8” from the front of the trigger to the back of the buttplate. The plate has thinning at the edges, wear and oxidation at the heel, and well defined checkering. The stock rates in Very Good-plus overall condition.
Type of Finish: Blue
Finish Originality: Original
Bore Condition: The bore is mostly bright with sharp rifling. There is no erosion in the bore but there is a little stubborn fouling, mostly at the muzzle-end. In this writer’s opinion, this bore rates 9 out of 10.
Overall Condition: This rifle retains about 95% of its metal finish. The finish is thining at most edges. The barrel has a few minor nicks and small scratches. The action shows operational wear and there is handling wear on the bolt knob. There are a few other scattered minor marks. The screw heads range from sharp to tool marked with strong slots. The markings are clear. Overall, this rifle is in Very Good-Fine condition.
Mechanics: The action functions correctly. There is a safety mounted on the bolt sleeve. Pushed forwards, the safety is OFF. If pulled back all the way, it locks both the bolt and the trigger. If pulled back half-way, it blocks only the trigger. We did not fire this rifle. As with all used firearms, a thorough cleaning may be necessary to meet your maintenance standards.
Box, Paperwork & Accessories: None.
Our Assessment: This is a vintage pre-1964 Winchester Model 70 rifle chambered in .30-06 Springfield and made in 1954. It is a Standard Rifle configuration with a monte-carlo stock. The rifle shows honest wear consistent with responsible use in the field. The .30-06 Springfield cartridge is a classic American round which is suitable for just about any game in North America and has a wild variety of loadings available. The rifle is in Very Good-Fine condition with about 95% of its finish remaining, a mostly bright bore with sharp rifling, and strong mechanics. This is a beautiful rifle in a great hunting cartridge that is ready to bag some game or add to your Winchester collection. Please see our photos and good luck!
