Markings: The left and right lock plates are marked “L.C. SMITH”. The water table is marked “PAT’D JULY 13 86 / PAT’D OCT. 6 86” and “211704”. The barrel rib is marked “HUNTER ARMS CO. / FULTON, NEW YORK”. The undersides of both barrels are marked “1” and “ARMOR STEEL”. The underside of the left barrel is marked “3”. The waterh table is marked “211704 / 00E”. The underside of the trigger guard plate is marked “HUNTER ONE TRIGGER”.

Choke: The left choke is Full (.695”) and the right choke is Improved Cylinder (.725”).
Sights / Optics: This shotgun is mounted with a brass bead front sight.
Stock Configuration & Condition: The two piece English walnut stocks have a checkered straight grip and a smooth forend. A chip of wood is missing from the top right edge of the forend, and another at the left lower forward edge of the butt stock. otherwise scattered shallow marks are present on the stocks. The DOC is 1 11/16” and the DOH is 2 9/16”. The LOP measures 13 7/8” from the front of the trigger to the back of the solid rubber recoil pad which is firm and cracking from dry rot. The recoil pad is in Poor condition. The stocks rate in about Good overall condition.

Bore Condition: The left bore is bright and there is fouling at the muzzle, but no erosion in the bore. The right barrel is bright and there are concentric tool marks at the muzzle, but no erosion in the bore.
Overall Condition: This shotgun retains about 60% of its metal finish. A patch of etching through the finish and into the metal is present near the bores. The finish along the barrels is thin, with exposed bare metal along the right barrel and at the chambers. The metal and finish are developing a dark patina. The case coloring on the frame is pronounced with shallow handling marks and clusters of pinprick surface etching visible. Significant finish thinning is present on the blue trigger guard. The screw heads are mildly distressed. The markings are clear. Overall, this shotgun rates in about Good condition.
Mechanics: The action functions correctly and features the optional Lard’s patent selective single trigger. A slide on the right side of the trigger guard plate selects whether the left or right barrel fires first. When the slide is in the rear position, an “L” is uncovered and the left barrel fires first. As it typical on the single trigger mechanisms, the tang safety does not automatically engage and must be manually engaged when the action is open. This shotgun is equipped with extractors. We have not fired this shotgun. As with all previously owned firearms, a thorough cleaning may be necessary to meet your maintenance standards.

Our Assessment: L.C. Smith shotguns by Hunter Arms were very popular and well respected throughout the late 1800s until producing ceased in 1950. This is a ‘00’ Field Grade hammerless side by side model with a Lard’s patent selectable single trigger and ejectors. This shotgun appears to be in great working condition. The stocks show a couple chips in the wood and handling marks, but no structural issues, however the recoil pad needs replacing. The finish is thin overall with patches of etching under a dark patina present on the forward portion of the barrels. The 00 grade of shotguns were the workhorses of the time. This one has seen a lot of use but has stood up well. Manufactured in 1909, this L.C. Smith/Hunter Arms SXS is a classic American shotgun.
