Markings: The right of the slide is marked with the Alchemy logo and “Alchemy Custom Weaponry”. The top of the chamber is marked with the Alchemy logo and “45 ACP”. The right of the frame is marked “ALCHEMY CUSTOM WEAPONRY, FORT WAYNE, IN / ACW188”.

Barrel Length: 4 1/4?

Sights / Optics: The front sight is a serrated blade with a tritium insert and is dovetailed to the front of the slide. The rear sight is an ACW serrated “U” notch sight with a slide racking front face. The rear sight is dovetailed into the slide and also has a set screw. The tritium lamp is bright and easily acquired in low light.

Stock Configuration & Condition: The grips are two-piece checkered black composite. There are some scattered light handling marks. The checkering is sharp and aggressive. There are no major defects. Overall, the grips are in about Excellent condition.

Finish Originality: Original

Bore Condition: The bore is bright and the rifling is sharp. There is no erosion. In my opinion, this bore is a 10 out of 10.

Overall Condition: This pistol retains about 96% of its metal finish. There are some spots of oxidation on the grip safety and backstrap. There are a few little marks through the finish on the trigger guard. There is faint operational wear. Overall, this gun rates in about Fine Plus condition.

Mechanics: The action functions correctly. The trigger is crisp. The slide has almost no play to the frame but moves smoothly. We have not fired this pistol. As with all used firearms, a thorough cleaning may be necessary to meet your maintenance standards.

Our Assessment: The 1911 and 1911-A1 pistols served the military of the United States from 1911 to 1985, through two World Wars and the Korean and Vietnam wars. They gained a reputation as a reliable handgun with plenty of stopping power, and are held in high regard by those who have used them. Still in use by militaries, law enforcement, and other civilians to this day, a wide variety of firms have produced either parts or components and there is a kaleidoscope of custom options for someone who wishes to build their own 1911.

The Alchemy Classic Carry 1911 is the baby of master gunsmith Rob Schauland. Strengthened by a steady diet of bald eagle protein shakes and steroid-fortified bacon, Schauland brooks no deviation from his high standards—the Classic Carry 1911 is ample proof of ACW’s near-fanatical devotion to the purity of the 1911 design. Continuing a 30-year quest, Rob Schauland strives for one thing: to create a 1911 pistol that is everything you need… and nothing you don’t. His guiding principle is to remain true to a design that has endured for 100 years and will endure for (at least) 100 more. The blood, sweat, and tears that go into every ACW 1911 is simply not found in a mass market pistol.

On the surface, the ACW Classic Carry looks very much like a John Browning-designed original. Upon closer inspection, Schauland’s ethos becomes more apparent. ACW has crafted the ergonomics of this new pistol to feel perfect—to feel exactly how a gun should feel in your hand. The result of this exhaustive effort is a pistol frame and slide designed the way they should be, which results in the highest 1911 grip in the industry.
