Markings: The left of the receiver is marked “MAUSER / MADE IN / GERMANY”, “M 03” and with a German proof, the left shoulder is marked “BRILEY HOUSTON, TX” and with the serial number, the right shoulder has a warning to read the owner’s manual. The magazine floorplate has a Mauser logo. The left of the barrel is marked “.416 Rem. Mag”, with German proofs, “AG” date code (2006), “M006966” and “MA”, the top of the barrel has a Mauser logo over “M 03 / MADE IN / GERMANY”. The bottom of the barrel is marked “96 SI 6040”.

Sights / Optics: The sights are an express set. The front sight is a blade with a metal bead, adjustable for elevation in a banded base at the muzzle. The rear sight is a wide, shallow “V”-notch with a vertical metal post for aiming reference, adjustable for windage in a base fixed to the rear of the barrel. The receiver has integral bases for a scope mount (none present).
Stock Configuration & Condition: The stock is one-piece checkered select walnut with ebony forend tip, capped pistol grip, straight comb with cheekpiece, and a black rubber buttpad. There is a sling stud in the belly and another sling mount on the bottom of the barrel forward of the forend. There are some spots of a stubborn gray residue on the left below the rear of the receiver. Otherwise, the stock has only light handling marks. The checkering is sharp. There are no chips or cracks. The LOP measures 14 3/8″ from the front of the trigger to the back of the buttpad. Overall, the stock is in Excellent condition.

Bore Condition: The bore is mostly bright and the rifling is sharp. There is no erosion in the bore, but there are some spots of stubborn copper fouling. In this writer’s opinion, the bore rates 10/10.
Overall Condition: This rifle retains about 99% of its metal finish. There is no notable wear or damage, only light handling marks. The screw heads are strong. The markings are clear. Overall, this rifle rates in Excellent condition.
Mechanics: The action functions correctly. We did not fire this rifle. As with all used firearms, a thorough cleaning may be necessary to meet your maintenance requirements.
Box, Paperwork & Accessories: This rifle comes in a hard-sided Mauser case with a torx-driver for removing/installing the barrel, owner’s manual, and a Schmidt Bender Zenith 1.1-4×24 scope with A9 reticle in Excellent condition.
Our Assessment: Introduced in 2003, Mauser’s Model 03 rifle is quite a leap forward from the traditional Mauser 1898 design. Equipped with a detachable box magazine and a six-lug bolt which locks into the quick-change barrel. This makes for a versatile rifle which can quickly be adapted to many different uses and game sizes. Before being discontinued in 2020, the M 03 was offered with a variety of chamberings, stock materials and finishes.
This example is an M03 Africa rifle with a 25″ barrel chambered for .416 Remington Magnum. The Africa model has a deluxe walnut stock with internal kick-stop and express sights. This rifle looks like it was maybe taken to the range and sighted in, but doesn’t show much sign of use and most likely hasn’t been out in the field yet. It comes with a nice Schmidt Bender scope, though you will need to get a mount. This is a beautiful rifle which is ready for your next safari. Please see our photos and good luck!
