Our Assessment: (Jim Boland is no longer with us, this is just a story) When you first ask Jim to customize a gun for you, you should expect a few things. Don’t expect a quick turnaround, some have waited over a year to get their guns. Expect to buy a brand new Springfield 1911, and be handed a bag of parts, all he wants is the slide and frame. Once you are comfortable with the time and price you get a one of a kind pistol. We have seen numerous Boland customs come through our shop, this pistol is just one step below the full house and will make one hell of a shooter. Some of the signature features include: “Mud Flaps”, Barrel notched at the extractor, Custom hand milled sight mount, welding to the frame and hand fabrication of mounts and slide to frame, Compensator added, full length guide rod, the entire backstrap shape and grip has been modified, grip safety disabled, Swenson ambi safety cut to fit the new profile of the gun, stippling to the front of the of the trigger guard, magazine well has been installed and the frame profile beveled to match, spur hammer, and ultra light crisp trigger. Almost forgot, the rear of the slide has been milled to fit the rear sight. The feed ramp and general mechanics have also been tuned. Some of the stippling marks have run and there is still some rough machining marks still visible. We would have liked to see less of these machine marks, but considering this gun is handmade it adds a little more character to the pistol.
