Markings: The left shoulder of the barrel is marked “1894 COWBOY LIMITED”, “THE MARLIN FIREARMS CO. NORTH HAVEN, CT. U.S.A. / **MODEL 1894CB – CAL. 357 MAG. OR 38 SPL. **” and a poorly struck “JM” proof at the rear. The right side is marked with a 2-line warning. The left side of the receiver at the bottom is marked with the serial number. The top of the bolt is marked “357”.

Barrel Length: 24” Octagonal

Sights / Optics: The front sight is a brass beaded blade with a serrated rear face dovetailed to the front of the barrel. The rear sight is a buckhorn with a reversible V/U-notch leaf and an elevator that is dovetailed to the barrel. The leaf has a white diamond aim reference. The top of the receiver is drilled, tapped and filled for an optic mount and the left of the receiver is drilled, tapped and filled for a peep sight (neither are included).

Stock Configuration & Condition: The stocks are two-piece checkered walnut with a steel nosecap, straight grip, straight comb and a checkered hard rubber Marlin buttplate. The Marlin bullseye is present in the belly. The wood shows a few small dings at the toe. There are also some infrequent tiny marks throughout the forearm. The checkering is sharp and there are no chips or cracks. The LOP measures 13 1/8” from the front of the trigger to the back of the buttplate. The buttplate shows some light scuffs at the heel and has sharp checkering. The stocks rate in about Fine-Plus condition.

Bore Condition: The bore is bright and the rifling is sharp. There is no erosion. In this writer’s opinion, the bore rates 10/10.

Overall Condition: This rifle retains about 96% of its metal finish. There is thinning on the sides of the lever, on the loading gate, and on the right side of the receiver below the gate. The receiver has some small nicks and faint lines throughout. There is faint thinning on the octagonal edges of the barrel as well as some scattered faint marks. The screw heads range from sharp to lightly tool marked with strong slots. The markings are clear with soft edges. Overall, this rifle rates in about Fine-Plus condition.

Mechanics: The action functions correctly. The crossbolt safety is present. The lever safety functions properly. We did not fire this rifle. As with all used firearms, a thorough cleaning may be necessary to meet your maintenance standards.

Our Assessment: This is a Marlin Model 1894 Cowboy Limited lever action rifle made in 1997 and chambered for .357 Magnum and .38 Special. The rifle is in about Fine-Plus condition. The bore is bright with sharp rifling and no erosion. This is a beautiful example of quality Marlin manufacturing. With .357 Magnum loads, the rifle can be used for hunting animals from small game and varmints up to and including coyotes. Cowboy action shooters should show interest as well.
