The rear sight is a Lyman 16B folding “U”-notch sight with white triangle aiming reference, adjustable for elevation and drift adjustable for windage in its dovetail on a boss at the rear of the barrel. The top of the receiver is drilled and tapped with a one-piece Redfield base and rings holding a Lyman Alaskan 2.5x scope with post reticle. The checkering is well defined. There are no chips or cracks. The LOP measures 13 1/2” from the front of the trigger to the back of the pad. The pad has scattered light wear and discoloration but is still fairly supple. The stock rates in Very Good overall condition.

Type of Finish: Blue

Finish Originality: Original

Bore Condition: The bore is bright with sharp rifling. There is no erosion in the bore.

Overall Condition: This rifle retains about 96% of its metal finish. The finish is thinning at most edges. There are infrequent light nicks and scuffs. There are a few spots of light oxidation, most notable on the front of the trigger guard. The action shows operational wear. The screw heads range from sharp to lightly tool marked with strong slots. The markings are clear. Overall, this rifle is in Fine condition.

Mechanics: The action functions correctly. There is a safety mounted on the rear of the bolt. Pushed forwards, the safety is OFF. If pulled back all the way, it locks both the bolt and the trigger. If pulled back half-way, it blocks only the trigger. We did not fire this rifle. As with all used firearms, a thorough cleaning may be necessary to meet your maintenance standards.

Box, Paperwork & Accessories: This rifle comes with the installed scope as described and a brown leather military-style sling.

Our Assessment: This is a vintage pre-1964 Winchester Model 70 rifle chambered in .338 Winchester Magnum and made in 1960, the year after the “Alaskan” style was first offered. The original Alaskan style was chambered only in .338 Winchester Magnum with a 25? barrel. Considered to be one of the finest cartridges for brown bear, the cartridge is one of the most popular medium-bore cartridges in North America and should make for a great hunting rifle for anything you’d encounter on the continent.

This example is in Fine condition, showing wear consistent with responsible use in the field. In addition to being the “Alaskan” style, it is also equipped with a vintage Lyman Alaskan 2.5x scope. The rifle retains a great bore and strong mechanics. This is a classic rifle in a great hunting cartridge that is ready to bag some game or add to your Winchester collection. Please see our photos and good luck!
