The stock has minor handling wear. There are a few light marks around the forward stock mounting screw, some light sling wear near the swivels, and a couple of tiny losses at the left-rear of the receiver in the top of the wrist and at the toe. There are no chips or cracks. The checkering is well defined. The LOP measures 13 1/2″ from the front of the trigger to the back of the buttplate. The plate has wear and some light erosion around the edges with well defined checkering. Overall, the stock is in Very Good-plus condition.

Type of Finish: Blue

Finish Originality: Original

Bore Condition: The bore is bright with sharp rifling. There is no erosion in the bore. Our gauge shows an ME of about 1.0.

Overall Condition: This rifle retains about 97% of its metal finish. The balance is almost all in light operational wear and handling wear on the bolt knob. Otherwise, there are only light handling marks. The screw heads range from sharp to lightly tool marked with strong slots. The markings are clear. Overall, this rifle is in Fine condition.

Mechanics: The action functions correctly. There is a safety mounted on the rear of the bolt. Pulled to the rear, the safety is OFF. Rotated forward all the way, it locks both the bolt and the trigger. If pulled back half-way, it blocks only the trigger. We did not fire this rifle. As with all used firearms, a thorough cleaning may be necessary to meet your maintenance standards.

Box, Paperwork & Accessories: None.

Our Assessment: This is a vintage pre-1964 Winchester Model 70 rifle chambered in .30-06 and made in 1942. The rifle is the “Standard Rifle” style with straight comb stock and is one of the most popular styles in one of the most popular chamberings. The .30-06 served the American military well for the first half of the 20th century and also became one of the most popular sporting cartridges in the nation. This is a beautiful rifle in a great hunting cartridge that is ready to bag some game. The rifle appears to have seen limited and responsible use, retaining a great bore, strong mechanics, minimal wear in the metal finish and light wear in the stock. This would still make for a great hunting rifle that will serve for years to come. That said, these pre-’64 Winchesters are quite collectible and this may have interest to collectors, especially as a WWII era-production gun. Please see our photos and good luck!
