Mechanics: The action functions correctly. There is a safety mounted on the top-rear of the bolt. Pushed forwards, the safety is ON. If pulled back all the way, the safety is OFF. If pulled back half-way, it blocks only the trigger. We did not fire this rifle. As with all used firearms, a thorough cleaning may be necessary to meet your maintenance standards.

Box, Paperwork & Accessories: This rifle comes with the installed scope as described. Also included is an AA & E leather sling with a tooled leather pad carved with an elk scene.

Our Assessment: This is a vintage pre-1964 Winchester Model 70 rifle chambered in .257 Roberts made in 1949. The rifle is the “Standard Rifle” style with factory iron sights and checkered walnut stock. The vast majority of the blue finish remains in the metal and the rifle has a great bore. Invented by Ned Roberts, the .257 Roberts cartridge was made from the 7mm Mauser case but necked down to .250″ or “quarter bore”. The result is a great all-around hunting cartridge that is still popular with hand-loaders today. While this would still make a great hunting rifle, especially with the included sling and scope, the Pre-64 Winchesters have high collector interest, and this example would be a great addition to a Winchester collection.
