Markings: The left side of the rifle is marked “.22 L.R.”. The right side of the barrel is marked “J. STEVENS ARMS & TOOL CO. / CHICOPEE FALLS, MASS. U.S.A.” upside down. The left side of the receiver is marked “TRADE MARK / STEVENS / REG.U.S.PAT.OFF.&FGN.”. The underside of the barrel is marked with the serial number “70403”. The bottom tang is marked “44” and “70403”.
Barrel Length: 24”, 1/3 Octagonal 2/3 Round
Sights / Optics: The front sight is a beaded blade dovetailed to the barrel above the muzzle. There is a fold-up V-notch leaf sight dovetailed to the top rear of the barrel. The upper tang has a peep tang sight installed with a fold-up ladder to adjust for elevation. There is a bit of tape repair at the top of the ladder.
Stock Configuration & Condition: The stocks are two-piece wood featuring a screwed on checkered schnabel style forend and a butt-stock with a checkered straight wrist, a straight comb and a semi-crescent butt-plate. There are a few light scratches, nicks, and compressions. The checkering is sharp. There are no chips or cracks. The LOP is 12 3/4” from the trigger to the rear end of the butt-plate. The butt-plate has no notable wear or damage. Overall, the stock is in Fine condition.

Bore Condition: The bore is bright with sharp rifling. There is no erosion in the bore.
Overall Condition: This rifle retains about 98% of its metal finish. There is minor finish wear around the edges of the octagonal part of the barrel and edges of the receiver. The screw heads are sharp. The markings are clear. Overall, this rifle is in Fine to Excellent condition.
Mechanics: The action functions correctly. The lever lockup is strong. We did not fire this rifle. As with all used firearms, a thorough cleaning may be necessary to meet your maintenance requirements.

Our Assessment: This is a J. Stevens Arms & Tool Company manufactured Model 44 “Ideal” Rifle which is chambered for .22 LR rounds. This rifle is surprisingly well taken care of for a rifle that was being manufactured well over 100 years ago, and it remains mechanically sound. This is a great option for J. Stevens and historical firearms collectors. Or, a wonderful platform for teaching new shooters. Good luck on your bid!
