The left side of the receiver is marked “WINCHESTER / -TRADE MARK-”. The right side of the receiver’s chamber ring is marked “42505”. The bottom of the bolt body is hand-scribed “42505”.

Barrel Length: 24?

Sights / Optics: The front sight has been removed, with a blank installed in the textured, ramped base fixed to the front of the barrel. The base is grooved for a hood which is not present. The rear sight has similarly been removed from a boss at the rear of the barrel, the dovetail filled with a Redfield blank. The top of the receiver is drilled and tapped with a one-piece Redfield base installed and rings holding a Lyman Alaskan 2.5x scope with crosshair reticle. The scope has minor wear in the body and fairly clear glass. The left-rear of the receiver is drilled and tapped for a receiver sight (none included).

Stock Configuration & Condition: The stock is one-piece hand checkered walnut with a pistol grip, straight comb, sling swivels front and rear, and a ventilated brown rubber Pachmayr White Line recoil pad. The stock has a few scattered minor nicks and scuffs with a few more notable marks in the bottom of the forend. The checkering is well defined. There are no chips or cracks. The LOP measures 13 1/2? from the front of the trigger to the back of the recoil pad, 12 1/2″ to the back of the wood, indicating that the stock has been cut. The pad has light wear at the heel and toe and has hardened slightly with age. Overall, the stock is in about Fine condition.

Type of Finish: Blue

Finish Originality: Refinished

Bore Condition: The bore is mostly bright with sharp rifling. There is infrequent minor erosion in the bore, mostly at the muzzle-end. Our gauge shows an ME of about 0.5.

Overall Condition: This rifle retains about 95% of its metal finish. There are some scattered minor nicks and scuffs on the barrel and receiver with more notable marks and wear on the bottom metal. The action shows light operational wear. The screw heads range from sharp to tool marked with strong slots. The markings are clear. Overall, this rifle is in Very Good-Fine condition.

Mechanics: The action functions correctly. There is a safety mounted on the top-rear rear of the bolt. Pulled to the rear the safety is OFF, pushed to the front the safety is ON, locking both the bolt and the trigger. If pulled back half-way, it blocks only the trigger. We did not fire this rifle. As with all used firearms, a thorough cleaning may be necessary to meet your maintenance standards.

Box, Paperwork & Accessories: This rifle comes with the installed scope as described.

Our Assessment: This is a vintage pre-1964 Winchester Model 70 Standard Rifle chambered for the classic .30-06 cartridge and made in 1942. The rifle has some light, honest wear, consistent with responsible use. It has strong mechanics and a nice bore. Ammunition for this rifle is (usually) readily available in a variety of loadings and makes for a wonderful hunting rifle that can be used on just about any game in North America. It comes equipped with a vintage Lyman Alaskan 2.5x scope. Whether you’re looking to add to your Winchester collection or just want a great hunting rifle, this will be a great gun to add to any safe in America. Please see our photos and good luck!
