Our Assessment: The .38 Special California Highway Patrol (CHP) Model 68 is a traditional double action revolver built on the Square Butt K Target Frame and is rated for +P ammunition. These were manufactured for the CHP and later for the Los Angeles Police Department in 1983 when the California Highway Patrol was not permitted to carry .357 Magnum sidearms. This revolver is marked “LOS ANGELES POLICE DEPARTMENT” on the right side of the barrel. Interestingly, the frame is also over-stamped on the model marking changing from “66-2” to “68-2”, with the serial prefix matching another such marked revolver according to the Standard Catalog of Smith & Wesson. This is a consecutive pair in Excellent condition with about 97% finish remaining, bright bores with sharp rifling, and a tight lockup on the cylinders. These would make a great shooters, but the high condition, accompanying accessories, and intriguing markings may also get the dedicated Smith & Wesson collectors interested. Please see our photos and good luck!
